Meiko abandons water softening

By James Russell: Meiko abandons water softening

March 3, 2013

Breakthrough in new reverse osmosis water treatment signals the end for water softeners. “We will no longer be offering integral or cabinet water softeners,” says Bill Downie, Managing Director of Meiko UK Limited. “This spells the end for softened water for warewashing.”

All Meiko premium front-loading and hood-type glass, dish and utensil washers are now fitted with GiO reverse osmosis water treatment technology, also available for the MiQ range of rack transport and flight dishwashers.

For more details on Meiko’s 3 year all-inclusive “NO -BILLS GUARANTEED” added value GiO warewashing package take a look here.

“Replacing softeners with reverse osmosis gives sparkling clean glassware and dishes and saves hundreds of pounds annually for the user, that being a combination of the cost of salt, reduced detergent and rinse aid consumption and eliminating the need for powder or liquid chlorinated chemicals.”

Meiko’s GiO reverse osmosis technology was first introduced by the German ware washing specialist back in 2008 and has proved to be an outstanding success where spot free and sparkling glassware is the order of the day. RO water removes all calcium and up to 98% of mineral particles from water, leaving glasses and cutlery, in addition to dishes and kitchen utensils absolutely clean.

Unlike other RO water treatment systems on the market, the GiO system is contained within the machine footprint and needs no independent softener apparatus for pre-conditioning the incoming raw water and is therefore simpler to install and in the majority of instances, is a far more cost effective solution.

Water softeners take up valuable floor space; they need electrical power and drainage; and staff must remember to keep them topped up with salt. If they forget, a busy catering operation or pub in a hard water area will see visible limescale build-up within a few days – and you can bet there is treble the visible amount in the boiler – just 1mm of scale adds 12% to the running costs.

Softeners also cause serious maintenance bills for the operation. What pub or restaurant in the UK has never had to call in an engineer to descale the boiler of a glass or dishwasher? At Meiko we can trace 12-15% of breakdown calls back to leaks, timer failures or lack of salt within the water softener itself.
