Don’t be afraid to ask questions and ignore the ‘Greenwash’

By James Russell: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and ignore the ‘Greenwash’

March 6, 2013

Meiko GiO warewashing machines do not need the use of water softeners to provide top quality results. Meiko has tracked 12-15% of breakdown calls in the past back to leaks, timer failures or lack of salt within the water softener itself…this is the end for water softening!

GiO is Meiko’s new reverse osmosis technology and is fitted onto undercounter, hood type, rack and flight transport machines and pot washers. Unlike other RO water treatment systems on the market GiO is contained within the machine footprint and needs no independent softener apparatus for pre-conditioning the incoming raw water and is therefore simpler to install and in the majority of instances, is a far more cost effective solution.

For users of Meiko’s FV40.2G-GiO undercounter dish and glasswasher, for example, the removal of water softeners will save up to £300 per machine annually (compared with Meiko’s previous ECO530 warewasher + softener); the savings being a combination of the cost of salt, reduced detergent and rinse aid consumption (saving of 1-1.5ml detergent / 0.50-0.75ml rinse aid per cycle). The FV40.2G-GiO also eliminates the need for powder or liquid chlorinated chemicals for glassware renovation.

GREEN ISSUES: Look for honest comparative information on water, energy etc

Some manufacturers are worse than others at providing transparent and honest information relating to energy, water and chemical consumption.

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions of potential suppliers,” says Nick Falco, Group Sales Director, Meiko UK.

“Some manufacturers or suppliers insist on using ‘greenwash’ – boastful and inaccurate claims as to energy efficiency etc – smoke and mirrors which serves only to confuse the market. For example, one of Meiko’s competitors lays claim to ‘impressive energy savings’ for a pass-through machine which competes with the Meiko DV80.2.

The claim is that drain heat recovery (at an extra cost of £870 list) and an integrated exhaust hood reduces the connected load to 9.5kW. But the comparable machine from Meiko, the DV80.2 with integrated exhaust hood – but without drain heat recovery – features a lower 8.3kW connected load.

“Why pay in the region of £870 for a feature that will cost an additional £210* a year in energy costs to run? * (based on 4 hours a day, 365 days per year, energy at 12p per kW/hr). The competitor’s machine also features a wash tank almost twice as large as the Meiko machine – does this mean increased energy for water heating, increased water consumption and detergent consumption?”
