Innovate makes its first donation to Mary’s Meals

By James Russell: Innovate makes its first donation to Mary’s Meals

February 8, 2013

Donation will feed 1,165 children for a whole school year in the world’s poorest communities

Innovate Services, the innovative school catering operator, is proud to be making its first donation to the charity Mary’s Meals, following its commitment to support the organisation as its designated charity six months ago.  The donation of £12,468.48 has come as a result of Innovate’s pledge to donate 4p for every bottle of water sold at its 80 school restaurant sites across the UK.

Since partnering with Mary’s Meals, over 311,700 bottles of water have been bought by students and staff at Innovate’s school catering sites, including Pimlico Academy, which itself saw 15,480 bottles purchased over the last six months alone.

Commenting on the donation, Ken Robb, Finance and Operations Director at Pimlico Academy said: “It’s great to think that by buying a bottle of water at school, our students are able to help a child less fortunate than themselves somewhere else in the world.  Something that we take for granted here is a lifeline for others and so it’s great to hear how much has been raised so far.”

Mary’s Meals is a global movement that sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities. Mary’s Meals provides one daily meal in a place of learning in order to attract chronically hungry children into a classroom, where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty.   Today, the charity is providing daily meals to over 730,000 hungry children every day in 16 different countries across the world. It costs Mary’s Meals just £10.70 to feed a child for a whole school year.

Daniel Adams, Press Officer at Mary’s Meals, said, “We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Innovate and the students and teachers at the schools it operates in. By simply purchasing bottles of water during the school day, those who have taken part in this initiative will have contributed to the feeding of 1,165 hungry and impoverished children for an entire school year. The provision of Mary’s Meals makes a life-changing difference to the children in our projects since, for many, the daily meal we provide is the only substantial meal they will have that day. We are very grateful to everyone who has made this generous donation possible.”

Added Derick Martin, co-founder and CEO, Innovate Services: “The work Mary’s Meals does across the world to provide children with food in their local schools is just fantastic. We are extremely proud to be able to support this worthy organisation and to hear that our first donation will make a difference to over one thousand children is humbling, to say the least.”
