Hotel room rates soared in 2012

By James Russell: Hotel room rates soared in 2012

February 5, 2013

Cities in the north of the UK have seen room rates soar in 2012, according to HRS’ recent Hotel Price Radar. HRS compared hotel room prices in ten cities across the UK and the rest of the world in 2012 with prices from the previous year.

The average room rate in London increased by over 4% compared to 2011 – perhaps not as great an increase as first expected. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and the imminent approach of the Olympics, fuelled tourism in the capital and pushed hotel prices up in the first half of 2012.

Post Olympics, hotels priced themselves competitively again, to encourage business travellers back into the city in the aftermath of the Games. Glasgow was the only city to experience a price decrease – good news for spectators looking to travel to the region ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year.
