There were planning applications for over 180 new hotels submitted to local authorities for approval during 2012. With 115 hotels also undertaking significant refurbishment or extension, there are active new construction projects involving over 16500 new hotel rooms across the UK – according to recent data released by construction information provider Planning Pipe.
The study examined all new planning applications submitted during 2012 involving significant construction work for new or existing hotels. The analysis revealed that 122 new build hotels were submitted for planning approval last year. Together with over 60 conversions of existing premises to hotels, these new construction projects will add 14500 rooms to UK hotel room stock.
Five out of ten of the largest new hotel projects are planned for London, headed by a new six storey 425 room project near Heathrow’s Terminal 1 which gained detailed planning approval in November last year.
There were plans for a further 2000 new hotel rooms as a result of refurbishment and extensions to existing hotel sites, with London the most popular regional location for plans during 2012.
“New plans are not of course synonymous with available funding and construction start, however the data provides further evidence of real confidence in the hospitality sector” said Paul Graham from Planning Pipe. “Despite the fact that we also saw plans for the closure and conversion of 72 hotels – with the loss of an estimated 850 rooms – overall there is clearly a positive picture of significant net investment growth in the sector.”
