Tilleys Bar, Newcastle celebrates 150

By James Russell: Tilleys Bar, Newcastle celebrates 150

December 4, 2012

Tilleys Bar in Westgate Road, Newcastle, will be celebrating on 15 December: 150 different bottled beers on sale all at the same time. The beers come both from local breweries and from all over the world, many very rare in the north east.

Anthony Ellis, Assistant Manager of Tilleys Bar is visibly excited when explaining about all the beers that will be on offer: award winning beer, devilishly strong beer, fruit beer, famous beer, smoked beer, beer brewed by monks, beer in funny glasses, beer from the oldest brewery in the world, wheat beer, dark beer, non-alcoholic beer, local beer, organic beer, beer with corked bottles, beer voted best in the world….

150 beers and a limited edition

“We are extremely excited about the beer that will be our actual 150th beer on sale at the same time:  Allendale Brewery has been kind enough to bottle for us some of their very special new brew. It is this very rare and limited edition beer. With only 48 bottles in existence (and we’ve been told by the boys at Allendale that only 46 are likely to reach us) it’s going to go quickly and once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

Celebrate with lip-smackingly bitter brews!

To help celebrate, the staff at the pub came up with another idea, one that’s 100% exclusive to Tilleys Bar. They invited four of the north east’s most popular breweries to each brew a one-off, unique-formula draught beer. They asked for beer with huge hoppiness: at least 150 International Bittering Units (IBUs). In comparison to regular offerings, this is very hoppy indeed – beers with IBUs greater than 45 are regarded as being heavily hopped and can be quite bitter. Says Ellis:

“It is likely that these special brews will be lip-smackingly bitter!”

The breweries to take up the challenge are Tyne Bank, Brew Lab, Anarchy and Allendale. The master brewers have been given only one criterion to meet: 150 IBUs.

For the benefit of ‘tickers’, it is intended that all four of the special beers will be available on 15 December.
