InterContinental London Westminster opens

By James Russell: InterContinental London Westminster opens

December 10, 2012

The first InterContinental hotel to open in London for over 36 years, the InterContinental London Westminster opened its doors at the end of November in the political heartland of Britain: located just a short walk from Parliament, in earshot of Big Ben and within sight of Westminster Abbey.

A £150m investment project, developed by Shiraz Boghani and family of Supreme Hotels, this new hotel will inject a fresh lease of life into Queen Anne’s Chambers, a former government building. Behind its townhouse style exterior, the hotel’s elegant interiors marry rich furnishings and British finesse to create an intimate sanctuary at the centre of Westminster’s urban revival. Spread across six floors it features 256 beautifully designed rooms including 44 luxurious suites and an imposing penthouse.

The Blue Boar Smokehouse & Bar

The Blue Boar Smokehouse & Bar will sit at the heart of the hotel’s food and drink offering. The bar will bring a sense of sophistication to the traditional British pub, offering carefully selected local ales, classic cocktails, and British wines, whilst the restaurant is set to be a buzzing destination to meet for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Dark wood panelling and warm tones will nod to the traditional members’ clubs of London.

Taking inspiration from the best American pit masters but with distinctly British influence, The Blue Boar menu will evolve around authentic smoke house techniques. On-site charcoal and smoking ovens will serve up classic comfort food using great British produce.

Emmeline’s

Emmeline’s will be an oasis at the hotel’s centre, named after the 19th Century British political activist Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the suffragette movement. Exotic flowers, soft tones, and delicate furnishings create an ideal setting for cocktails and champagne. The adjoining Lobby Lounge will serve an indulgent afternoon tea including an extensive range of traditional tea blends.

Art collection

The hotel’s art collection is totally unexpected for a hotel of this calibre – injecting satire and wit in healthy doses within an area renowned for its political heritage.

Pieces include a selection of limited edition signed prints from artist of the moment and political satirist Gerald Scarfe, lithographs by Chris Orr, political cartoons by Marin Rowson and bronze sculptures by Tom Clark.  A giant ‘hall of fame’ canvas by Agamaria Pasternak features 650 past and present members of the house.

The hotel’s Concierge will be well versed in the ways of Westminster but also on hand to help uncover some of London’s best kept secrets. From exclusive access to sights around town or guided day trips of the area, the Concierge’s interactive desk will be alive to the buzz of Westminster Village .

The InterContinental London Westminster is owned by Supreme Hotels LLP with debt support from HSBC and managed by the InterContinental Hotel Group.
