With registration now open for Machine Games Duty, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) is recommending that pubs should register now ahead of the busy Christmas period – a message that would apply to other establishments with a machine that pays out a cash prize.
The BBPA has updated its guidance for pubs, with further advice to help publicans through the registration process for this new tax on gaming and skill machines.
MGD replaces Amusement Machine Licence Duty and VAT on machine income from 1st February 2013. However, licensees must register by 1st January, with the prospect of penalties for those failing to register. The revised BBPA guidance covers key questions, such as how the registration process works, a step-by-step guide to online registration and where to find the correct forms.
Pubs should also check that their accountant is up to speed with the new MGD taxation regime, says the BBPA, so that they take into account any VAT implications that the new tax may bring to their business.
BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds comments:
“Now is definitely the time to register for MGD, to get it done before the Christmas period – and it’s important to be aware that MGD covers not just AWPs but any machine that pays out a cash prize including skill machines.”
