Oyster Catcher sets hospitality sector example with work experience scheme

By James Russell: Oyster Catcher sets hospitality sector example with work experience scheme

October 3, 2012

Hull pub the Oyster Catcher has become part of an employment initiative to help local people back into work by signing up for the government work experience scheme earlier this year: its first placement employee is about to finish his eight week stint with flying colours.

Under the government project, businesses are urged to take on people for work experience placements, helping jobseekers build up their experience and allowing employers to see the talent within their area.

It is hoped that at the end of the placement the work experience participant will be in line for a job. Even if there is no permanent vacancy available, they have enhanced their CV considerably and demonstrated their skills and employability.

Jordan Jones, General Manager at the Oyster Catcher comments:

“It’s an excellent scheme and could go a long way towards boosting businesses and boosting employment figures. By giving people the chance to get back into a real-life work situation we can help them increase their chances of finding a new job. It is a great initiative for those who want to work, but are struggling to find a job for various reasons.”

The current work experience member at the Oyster Catcher is Nick. In his 40s, Nick was off work for several years because of an injury and struggled to get back in to employment once he was fit and well.

“Nick has become an important part of the team and is working in the kitchen as an Assistant Chef. We have given him the same training and development opportunities as the rest of our staff, as well as a comfortable way for him to get back into a working lifestyle.”

As a result of the pub’s participation in the scheme, Jordan has now been asked to attend a jobs fayre in Hull. Alongside two other Orchid Group pub managers from the area he will be highlighting the importance of the initiative and just what it means to people and businesses.

Jordan continues:

“Taking someone on work experience for an eight-week block gives employers a chance to trial a new person without the risk. It gives us confidence in them because we know they are dedicated to finding a good job, and it is a really positive step for them. The short commitment means it is flexible and it can really open up the work arena for those who need to get on the career ladder.”
