EU Hotel Prices fall by 23% in time for October Half Term

By James Russell: EU Hotel Prices fall by 23% in time for October Half Term

October 13, 2012

After last month’s dramatic increase in hotel prices, the monthly trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) figures show prices have finally fallen across the UK and Europe. An overnight stay in October will now cost an average of £99, compared to £105 last month.

UK hotel prices decrease

Last month saw hotel prices increase by up to 21% in the UK’s main cities. After the expensive Olympic summer, travellers this month will be glad to know UK hotel prices have finally dropped. In anticipation of the beginning of Autumn and colder weather, one night is on average £4 cheaper than last month.

Cities with the largest decreases in overnight accommodation are Brighton (down 15% compared to last month), Edinburgh (down 13%) and Dublin (also down 13%).

October half term: UK

Those planning to stay in the UK during the October half term are in luck, as prices have decreased in comparison to last month. On average, UK hotel prices have decreased by 5%, but larger savings can be found by looking at specific regions. Hotels in popular October half term destinations Cornwall, Dartmoor and the Lake District have all decreased dramatically in comparison to September.

EU hotel prices decrease

Similarly to the UK, hotel prices have decreased throughout the rest of Europe in comparison to September. The only city showing a notable increase is Madrid, where prices have increased by 18% to an average of £98 per night. On average, European hotel prices have decreased by 6% and are £6 cheaper than last month.

The Trivago hotel price index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for the most popular European cities on trivago. Prices for a standard double room are calculated on the basis of one million daily price inquiries for overnight hotel stays generated through the trivago hotel price comparison service The tHPI reflects the hotel prices within the European online hotel market: The overnight accommodation prices of over 100 online travel agents and hotel chains create the average hotel prices for cities, regions and countries within Europe
