Superb summer of sport – BBPA issues guidance for running great pub events

With millions set to enjoy a superb summer of sport in their favourite local pub, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has issued clear guidance for pubs, which should help to ensure their European Football Championship and Olympic events run smoothly, safely and successfully. The BBPA has teamed up with the Home Office, Local Government Association (LGA) and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), to produce the guidance, and has made the advice freely available on its website at www.beerandpub.com, today.

The guidance will help pubs, police and local authorities to work together to ensure that Euro 2012 and the Olympics are successful and enjoyable events in pubs. It provides a handy checklist for licensees to ensure that all angles are considered and covered when it comes to running a pub event. As well as liaising with the police and licensing authorities, the comprehensive checklist covers issues such as staffing, controlling admissions in a sensible way, use of glassware or plastic, and the positioning of screens in venues.

Martin Rawlings, Director of Pubs at the BBPA says:

“Pubs have long experience in running football and other sporting events and have built up a detailed knowledge of how to do this successfully and safely. Many pubs have been planning their European Championship and Olympic events for months and will already have carefully considered plans in place.

“This guidance is a helpful checklist to run through, just to ensure all the angles are covered. We have agreed the content with the Home Office, LGA and ACPO and intend it to be recognised as good practice by pubs, police and local authority enforcement officers.

BBPA Chief Executive, Brigid Simmonds, adds:

“Pubs really bring people together, when it comes to live sport. For the big screen experience and atmosphere, there is no better place. I hope as many people as possible enjoy sport in the pub this summer, and that this will help pubs to plan for these great events.”
