Student competition helps major 203 room hotel refurbishment

By James Russell: Student competition helps major 203 room hotel refurbishment

June 22, 2011

The Crowne Plaza London has completed a major refurbishment to its 203-guestrooms, with stylish artwork provided by Central St Martins, following a competition that required students to create a series of pieces, which have been placed in the completed guestrooms.

Situated within the world’s leading financial hub, minutes from the Thames and Blackfriars, students were encouraged to use the hotel’s location as inspiration for the project, which would complement the interior design.

The competition open to all students, was whittled down to five candidates who each followed the remit and produced artwork which now sits in the new guestrooms and communal passageways.

As part of their prize, each successful student has been given a night’s stay in a guestroom, with their respective reproduced piece, together with a monetary prize. Central St. Martins has received a financial donation too.

The Refurbishment – has ensured all seven floors of the City hotel, has a historic, yet stylish contemporary feel. Located in the heart of the City, means the hotel sits amongst a historical myriad of beautiful architecture, fascinating stories, and iconic industries – all key in the formation of The City. One such legacy is Fleet Street. Reputed architect and interior designer Sue Wheldon, of Brandarchitects, has cleverly drawn upon Fleet Street’s history, by working to weave the story of what was once known as the “printers paddock” into the theme, providing the design with a strong sense of character.

Commencing with the carpets, striking printing blocks in grays and charcoals, snake around corridors, delivering guests to their stylish new rooms. Upon entering the rooms, the interiors suggest a completely different feel. The hotel has partnered with celebrated fabric and wallpaper designer, Osborne & Little; opulent purples, rich bronzes and sparkling coppers, create a feel of modern luxury, yet has maintained practicality for business travelers who are the hotel’s main clientele. All guestrooms have been equipped with a large LCD flat screen TV and in-room high-speed Internet access (wired and wireless).

Commenting, Paul Brackley, general manager, said, “We were delighted to have joined forces with Central St. Martin’s, the standard and creativity was extremely impressive. Given the theme, it was essential the artwork fitted with the whole style of the refurbishment and the students have done an amazing job!”
