Is Chocolate the cure for the common cough

By James Russell: Is Chocolate the cure for the common cough

April 21, 2011

The next time you have an annoying  cough, you might want to consider replacing that soothing cup of hot lemon and honey, with a big dose of chocolate.

A drug made from theobromine, an ingredient found naturally in chocolate, may soon make its way to the market as a treatment for persistent coughs.

The chocolatey therapy is based on research conducted at London’s National Heart and Lung Institute, which found that theobromine was 33% more effective than codeine at treating persistent coughs.

It also soothes nagging coughs without any of the irritating side effects of the standard codeine products, which can cause drowsiness and constipation.

The theobromine drug enters the final phase of clinical trials this year, and if it is found effective, could hit the market within two years.

Until then, conduct your own clinical trial with one of our favorite chocolate recipes. It probably won’t help with your cough, but they’ll sure taste a lot better than cough syrup…
